A Lesson on Missional Living- Part 1

Photos by Connie Rock of Purchase Effect, The Faces are Blurred to Protect the Identity of Our Friends Upon arrival in Thailand this past week, I asked the Lord what my purpose was for being here. I had been here twice already for this Adventures in Missions trip and really didn’t understand what God wanted to do or learn a third time.   After 8 days of being in Thailand and doing ministry and outreach in the streets of Patpong, experiencing one night of outreach in Nana, and building relationships in our neighborhood where we reside, its’ so evident why I am here again. We are building trust in women who have been exploited, disappointed, hurt, mistreated, and used. As I see many of the same face for a third time, I have witnessed their guards come down and faces light up because I am in their country again; taking the time to love them. Even with language barriers and the use of my handy Thai language app, hand motions; there is a language that we speak that they understand fluently and that is: Love. It’s the one language that transcends barriers, and breaks down walls.   Building this trust and showing the love of Christ is all a part of the greater lesson I have learned by coming on these trips. This lesson is on “how to live missionally. “ Missional living is simply the posture, thinking and behavior of a missionary in order to engage others with the gospel message. It’s the belief that we all have a responsibility to fulfill the great commission. This is...

Same Same, But Different

Galatians 3:28 (Message)-In Christ’s family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ. Have you ever felt alone when going through a challenge in your life? In the midst of trials and tribulation, it’s easy to feel as if you are the only person in the world that is going through. Our emotions during the trial can make us feel as if we are by ourselves on an island. This is how I used to feel. Over the course of my life I have had to overcome a lot of things from depression, to promiscuity, to drug abuse, and much more. There were times when I felt no one understood the pain that I was experiencing. When I came into the knowledge of Jesus Christ, I learned that I was never alone because God never leaves us, nor forsakes us. I also learned that Jesus could indeed identify with my weaknesses and temptations yet He did not sin. Hebrews 4:15-16 (Message)-Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help. During, this trip to Thailand it was confirmed yet again that what I’ve had...

Do We Dare to Believe? Mission: Thailand 2014

Photo by Connie Rock Last year I attended this particular Adventures in Missions trip to Thailand and was truly impacted! Feel free to read about my experience from 2013 here: http://jenniferlucyinspires.com/her-name-was-pretty-day-3-part-of-day-4-thailand-missions/. I must also give you all an update on “Bella”, or in my 2013 blog I called her “Pretty.” Well, not only did she stop working in the bar, she began to work at Rahab Ministries for a few months! Today, she is working in another village as a car saleswoman!! Hearing stories like this truly speak to the power of prayer and building relationships, which this Thailand trip encourages its participants to do. We must also remember, that some will plant, some will water, but its always God who receives the increase and all of the glory!     One of the things I love most about this particular trip to Thailand with Adventures in Missions is the focus on spiritual awareness, discernment, and prayer.  Prayer is how we as Christians communicate with our Father and how we hear Him communicate with us. Although this is an open line of communication, it’s often taken for granted and not utilized amidst the hustle and bustle of life in the states. Here there is no room to take this for granted because everything we do must be done prayerfully as the Holy Spirit leads us. Things happen when we pray! This trip really stretches your ability to believe that because from the surface, you wonder if change is really taking place.   From having attended this trip back in 2013, one of the things we consistently prayed for is...

Knowing Jesus, Is Sharing Jesus: Missional Living 101

During our trip to Thailand we had the opportunity to visit the Grand Palace.  The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782.  The current king does not reside there.  However, several royal ceremonies and state functions are held within the walls of the palace every year.   This was my second time visiting the Grand Palace.  Yet, I am still in awe of the elaborate structures, and walls filled with solid gold and jewels.  Nonetheless, what caught my attention more than the gold walls and the jewels was a simple sign near the entrance of the temple that said: Knowing Buddha, Buddha is not for Tattoo, Buddha is not for Decoration, Stop Buying Buddha.   This made me think of how we often treat Jesus, the Bible, and the cross. I do not believe there is anything wrong with expressing your faith through jewelry, t-shirts, etc. In fact, I believe it can be a great witnessing tool and conversation starter. Yet, many of us fail in making that connection to our faith, and sharing it with others.  This Buddha sign simply reminds me that I am to live missionally. Missional living is the adoption of the posture, thinking, behaviors and practices of a missionary in order to engage others with the gospel message. In our representation of the gospel with crosses on our necks, scriptures on t-shirts, we must remember to engage others with the message that we represent.   This is what I love about the Thailand trip. We often have times during the day to practice living life missionally, because...

I’m Going Going, Back Back, To Thailand Thailand

I’m Going Going, Back Back, To Thailand Thailand   “If we are going to accomplish the global purpose of God, it will not be primarily through giving our money, as important as that is. It will happen primarily through giving ourselves. This is what gospel represents, and it’s what the gospel requires.”- David Platt, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From the American Dream   This evening as we get ready to board the Ethihad plane to Thailand again this year, I am filled with emotions. Initially, when I decided to make this trip a second time I felt as if I would have the upper hand. I had been to Thailand before on a mission’s trip, so I thought I knew all of what to expect, how we would flow, etc. As pompous as that sounds, I truly thought I would be able to predict how it would all go down.   Well, as always God has a great sense of humor! That’s one of the many reasons why I love serving Him! This Christian life is an adventure! For those who have not turned on CNN lately, Thailand is currently experiencing “Political Unrest” or a Coup d’etat.  According to Merriam Webster that means, “a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics; especially: the violent overthrow or altercation of an existing government by a small group. If you want to read more about it, Google it! J So as you can imagine, all last week as we have been preparing my email has been flooded with messages of prayers and concerns. These messages have been coming along with alerts...

Stripped…

I was a struggling college student, and wanted the “material” things they appeared to have. They told me that with my looks and body, I could make a lot of money.

How to Fight-Part 1

How to Fight-Part 1   This topic has been on my heart. And although I do not blog on a consistent basis, it was on my heart heavy enough this morning to begin to write about it. Many of you are going through challenges or persecution and you feel overwhelmed. I pray that this blog encourages you and gives you some tools you need. This is part 1 in this series on “How to Fight.”   How many of you have ever been in a situation at school or in life where you knew you would possibly have a confrontation or a fight with someone bigger or stronger than you? Growing up I was the quiet girl who always had bigger, stronger, friends around me who had my back in school just in case things went wrong. With them as friends, I was without worries when adversity hit. I may have been more prepared, or felt as if I was able to handle myself if I had been in a fight before or better yet knew how to fight! Now here me out because I’m not condoning fighting people in my message but I’m going somewhere.   Speak this to yourself! “I Know How to Fight!” “I’ve already Won!”   Why do We Need to Know HOW to Fight? 1.John 16:33-  I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Unfortunately due to the fall of man, sin has entered the world. And due to...

So you bought “101 Things to Do Other Than Have Sex, Hump, Bump, and Grind” …Now What?

First I want to THANK all of you for taking advantage of the 5 dollar holiday stocking stuffer special on this book! You all bought me OUT for the year which was a huge blessing. I will have more books available in January, and pre-orders for this shipment begins THIS FRIDAY! I will post on my social media outlets when I open that up. 🙂 This book was designed to give you some practical things to do in your season of “waiting” and “courting.” My husband and I truly enjoyed the courtship process because we grew closer to Christ, we were forced to communicate (because flesh was not involved), and we grew in our purpose and personal endeavors. This book was designed to be the catalyst to get you to ask yourself the Important questions! Here are a few questions that you should be thinking about as you are reading this book: How is your health & wellness? Are you making sure that you establish good eating habits now before getting married? Are you both fit? Are you taking care of God’s temple (your body) from the inside/out?   Are you making serving His kingdom a priority? Are you serving in ministry at your church? Do you spend time giving back? Are you being Jesus’s hands and feet in the earth?   If you have entered into courtship, are you asking the serious questions?  Are you noticing red flags?  Do you have godly counsel?  Are you setting the proper boundaries for your relationship?  Are you walking in Purity together?   Are you doing things to grow in your individual...

Worried? Depressed? Focus on the Solution Today!

Proverbs 12:25-Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but an encouraging word makes it glad.- My heart’s desire is to encourage you on today. I know you are worried, I know things may not be going as you planned them too, I know it seems like nothing is going right, I know you may want more and desire more, I know they maybe in the hospital, I know your marriage may have challenges, I know you need to pay an important debt, but I also know that when YOU choose to trust God, this means you cast your cares on the one who cares for you! He loves you, and wont let you down. Use these times of uncertainty to place ALL of what you know in His Hands! Seek first the Kingdom, Delight yourself In Him! And although it may be difficult, simply be honest w/ God and ask Him to help you in the area of trust. Remember the former victories, and hold them close to your heart. When we are going through its easy to forget what God has already brought us through. He’s the same God! Remember that He’s got you! The solution is in Christ! The solution is in the Word of God. This what brings peace, and true joy! At times when we are depressed its because we’ve allowed ourselves to focus more on the problems of this world than the one who OVERCAME this world.   Below are some Bible verses to meditate on when feeling depressed. Remember you are NOT hopeless! Meditate on these verses below. Also if you desire...

Memories of Thailand…

*(Photos Taken By Kristen Torres-Torro and Connie Lengkeek Rock and are not to be used without their permission) A lot has happened this past week that has definitely added to my life and perspective.  In America we are spoiled and take many things for granted. We argue about petty things and work our butts off to get more and more “things” to add to our closets, bank accounts, and garages. We focus on so much that is temporal when our hearts and minds should be focused on things that are eternal. Jesus called us to be His hands and feet in the earth.  If we don’t do this by fulfilling the Great Commission, who will? How will people ever know of His love and hear the gospel without us? This trip to Thailand simply added more fuel to my fire. There is work to be done, all over the world, and “Believers” must get it done!   If you read my previous blog you probably remember “Pretty.”  She was the beautiful Thai girl who worked at a bar, and gave me her phone number. Well, the next day I was able to visit Rahab Ministry and call her from a landline there. She was SO excited to hear from me and that just warmed my heart. I attempted to tell her about Rahab, but she did not understand me. I then gave the phone to an Outreach worker there who translated some things for me.  It was difficult to communicate due to the language barrier, and I was so grateful for the outreach worker.  I knew that there was...

Her name was…. “Pretty” – Day 3 & Part of Day 4-Thailand Missions

Day 3, we entered into the Red Light District of Patpong, Bangkok. Our team was split into four groups. One group remained back where we all were staying to pray, one group went into the streets to focus on ministering and playing with the children who are usually in the streets during that time, another group went into the bars of Patpong for Outreach, and the last group Prayer Walked the streets of Patpong.   All of our roles, are different tonight.  Every role was necessary.   Tonight, was my night to prayer walk the streets of Patpong as the others were doing their tasks in the various places.  We prayed for the hearts of the people to be turned toward the Lord. We prayed for blinders to be removed, the protection of our team, and for the women who are working in this dangerous nightlife.  We prayed that people would not go into the bars, and that they would have to be shut down eventually. We also prayed for the men who patronize and support the Red Light District. Its easy to allow anger to take over and not want to pray for these men.  However, we must remember that our sins are no different from there’s.  These men are broken, and the enemy is using them to ruin women’s lives. As we prayer walked and noticed “Westerner” men walking with young girls from the bars, and in some cases a young boy or a “lady boy” my heart was broken for them. It was at that moment I knew that I was feeling how our Heavenly...

Greater Things Have Yet To Come, Greater Things Are Still to Be Done in This City- Day 2, Thailand Missions

Today, my team and I started this morning in worship together at a beautiful Anglican Church in Bangkok followed by a Communion service.  What better way to begin a mission like this by worshipping our God in spirit and in truth.  Since we arrived I have felt an overwhelming since of heaviness due to all that is in this area. Although it was VERY different from what I am used too in my non-traditional church back home it was what we all needed.   In the darkness, God is here….   As I kneeled to take communion I was surrounded by beautiful Thai, Indian, European, Caucasian, African, people.  I was comforted at that moment thinking, “this is what the Kingdom of Heaven must truly look like.” The service today gave me even greater peace, the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.   After lunch at a wonderful Indian restaurant, my team and I walked and prayed through the Red Light District of Patpong.  The streets were pretty much vacant for now, with few people setting up here and there for the great traffic of people to flood the streets later on.  The bars (fetish, gay bars, strip clubs, etc) with perverse names were empty, which we are told will look totally different a few hours from now. It was comforting to see Rahab Ministries (one of Adventures in Missions Ministry Partners) in the middle of the Red Light District.  This is a ministry that teaches women another trade who want out of working in the bars.  As I walked through this area, I prayed for the long...

Jesus At The Center of It All…Our Journey to Thailand

Jesus at the center of it all Jesus at the center of it all From beginning to the end It will always be, it’s always been You Jesus Jesus Nothing else matters, nothing in this world will do Jesus You’re the center, everything revolves around You Jesus You, at the center of it all The center of it all Today at around 11:30 am EST, myself and 28 other women will embark on a journey of a lifetime to Thailand. This journey will include sharing the love of Christ to women who are caught in the perils of Sex Trafficking in Thailand.  Thank you so much for all of those who contributed to this amazing mission and especially for your prayers. As we embark on the plane this morning I am filled with so many emotions. The feelings range from excitement, to a little bit of anxiety (this is normal when I go into an entire different country. I will also serve and live with women who some of which I’m meeting for the very first time in Bangkok), to sadness (I REALLY miss my family and my dog Shadow already), and gratefulness (the fact that I’m able to serve God in this capacity is mind blowing to me). I am actually looking forward to this 19 hour flight. This is my time to unplug from work, and cares of the world to totally unplug to focus on Jesus and what He will have us do for the next 10 days. With Him at the center of it all, there is no challenge or obstacle we can’t overcome! In Him...
